New school uniforms can be quite the expense at the beginning of the school year.

Kids seem to grow - and grow lots - over the summer with all the freedom of summer holidays and physical activity.

The last thing you need, then, is the kids coming home without sun hats, bags and, in winter, their jumpers.

Jumpers get left behind on ovals, drink bottles in the playground and, if bags look similar, can even accidentally be put into someone else's backpack.

Label, label, label. Everything.

Socks, shoes, hats, drink bottles, lunchboxes, pencils and pencil cases.

This greatly increases the chances of your stuff being returned, either by the school or another parent.

These days there is a customised label for every occasion: waterproof ones that stick to plastics, iron-on for clothes, and even the good old laundry marker is a quick and inexpensive solution.

If your school requires the school's own bag, a colourful key tag with your child's name on makes it easier for them to spot their bags amongst a bunch.

Another idea is to slot in a small laminated card with their name and a parent's phone number in the front pocket of the bag in case a student mistakenly takes home the wrong bag.

When it comes to choosing a lunch box for young or older, there is an overwhelming array to choose from.

If you're unsure what to get, being able to fit in an ice brick or two is key for food hygiene purposes.

Also, consider going green - some schools encourage minimal or zero wrappers and packaging in lunch boxes so reusable containers may be your go-to.

These take up more space in a lunch box so think about how many large and small containers need to squeeze in.

And will your young one or teenager enjoy a hot lunch in winter?

Flasks that mean students can tuck into a hot pasta or soup (a great way to ensure leftovers get eaten) have become popular requests lately.

When it comes to buying stationery, it's probably best to be guided by your school's information on exactly what to purchase.

Just don't forget those labels!
