"We are so excited to be welcoming Mr Fitzgerald to our beautiful part of NSW," said Cr Phyllis Miller OAM, Mayor of Forbes.
"He will be joining us at the Community Breakfast as well as Picnic in the Park, and we can't wait to hear his story."
Mr Fitzgerald has worked across Sydney's police stations for more than 30 years, and in 2019 was named NSW Volunteer of the Year for his work with community organisations and sporting groups across Western Sydney.
The Centre for Volunteering, in naming him the NSW Volunteer of the Year, said Chief Inspector Fitzgerald's volunteering resume ran over several pages.
"It is the impact that Bob's volunteering has had on so many people, organisations and his Western Sydney community that sets him apart," his award citation reads.
"His volunteering builds links between different and diverse communities."
Community members are encouraged to come down to meet Mr Fitzgerald at the Australia Day Community Breakfast at Lions Park from 7am to 9am and at Picnic in the Park at Lions Park from 7pm til 10pm.
This year also sees the return of the Australia Day street parade.
