A local couple whose community service spans decades have been named the first recipients of the Forbes Senior Citizen of the Year honour.

You'll often see Allan and Pamela Toole at work for a community cause: selling raffle tickets or running barbecues.

On Sunday night, they were recognised for their contribution to life in Forbes.

Between them, the Tooles have given more than 60 years of service to many worthy organisations including St Vincent de Paul, the House With No Steps, Forbes Breast Cancer Support Group, Forbes Prostate Cancer Support Group, Men's Probus and Meals on Wheels.

They are members of Neighbourhood Watch and volunteers at the Handicraft Centre.

"We hope that we can continue for quite a few more years in doing what we really enjoy doing," Mr Toole said in accepting the award.
