JANUARY is set to end on a hot note with a heatwave passing over the region that will bring well above average temperatures.

It will get hotter as the week progresses, with the mercury on the final day of January predicted to soar to as high as 44 degrees in one location.

A low intensity heatwave will pass across the region on Tuesday, and then Bureau of Meteorology says it will become a severe heatwave from Wednesday to Friday.

Forbes will be the hottest location in the region on Friday with a top of 44 degrees, it will also be a very hot 42 degrees in Dubbo, Parkes and Cootamundra.

A top of 41 is predicted in Cowra and Wellington, 40 in Mudgee and Goulburn, 39 in Oberon, 38 in Bathurst, 37 in Orange, and Lithgow will have the coolest maximum on Friday at 35 degrees.

The first day of February is also predicted to be very hot, before it cools slightly on Sunday and Monday.
