POLICE officers from across Western NSW have been deployed to the Victorian-NSW border as coronavirus cases continue to spike.

A state of emergency remains in place in Victoria with 270 new virus cases detected in the past 24 hours, while an outbreak in Sydney also emanated from south of the border.

While officers from Chifley, Central West, Orana Mid-Western and the Central North police districts have been deployed a NSW Police Force spokesperson would not confirm how many.

"Western Region has been required to send staff to adequately man the border check points at locations along the Murray River," she said.

"At this stage, the large-scale operation is ongoing and all western region police districts will continue to rotate staff as needed."

Officers will rotate through eight-hour shifts with border points manned 24 hours-a-day

While stationed along the border officers will be required to man check points on all bridge crossings into NSW, where they will check permits for the following:

  • Local border communities who are permitted to travel within a 50 kilometre radius of the township
  • People seeking to travel into NSW who will require 14 days quarantine/ self-isolation

The spokeswoman also declined to provide details on how long officers would be deployed out of the region.

"All police districts within western region will continue to operate as normal with enough police to provide calls for service," she said

"The border commitment will not impact normal policing."
