The junior Platypi will be travelling to Mudgee this Saturday to play against Wellington Redbacks U12s for the championship trophy.
This will be the first time this season that the Platypi will be going up against Wellington Redbacks this season due to a shortened nine-round season with 11 teams in the competition.
While they haven't gone up against them this year, Under 12's coach Tony Wallace said they were right up there in terms of skill over the last couple years coming up through the Walla program.
The Wellington Redbacks Under 12's are also going into the grand final match with no losses this season and only two draws.
Forbes Junior Rugby Club President Craig Bruem said that they are cautious but optimistic going into the final as the Wellington squad are a bit of an unknown factor.
The Platypi Under 12s have come up through the Walla ranks and most of the players have played together for several years, from the Under 7s and Mr Wallace said this has helped solidify them as a team.
Mr Wallace said the team was rather dominant on the field over the last few years as they came up through the Walla ranks and this continued onto to their first competitive year playing in the Under 12s.
The team has had a fantastic for and against point spread over the season, Mr Wallace said, with only a couple tries scored against them in the early rounds.
In the last four games, the Platypi Under 12s have a record of 200 points for and none against.
While they haven't conceded a point since before round five, Mr Wallace admits this doesn't always play out on grand final day, but they are going in with good form.
"We've got a really good mix of kids there. We've got some big, strong forwards and some very quick, slippery backs," Mr Wallace said.
"They're a very close-knit group, they're all good friends," he said.
Mr Bruem said the Under 12's has a very balanced squad with big forwards and fast backs and they enjoy playing footy together.
"They've played to a certain structure all year which is paying dividends," Mr Wallace said.
While they are heading into the game with good form, some players are sporting injuries, including a broken finger, broken collarbone and a torn groin.
However this isn't keeping the injured players from wanting to take to the field, Mr Wallace said, with all players aiming to take to the field.
"A lot of these kids have been playing in a program that has been non-competitive for years and they've finally got a crack at playing for something. We've made the grand final and they're really, really excited about that," Mr Wallace said.
Mr Wallace said on behalf of the coaches, they would like to thank Craig and the committee for being supportive of the team.
The Under 12's squad is coached by Tony Wallace, Chris Francis and Mark Wheeldon.
This is the first time that any of the Forbes junior teams in memory have contested the grand final, Mr Bruem said.
The other teams in the Junior Rugby Club had mixed success this season, with the Under 14's unlucky not to make the finals due to changed structure of the finals series this year.
In a normal year, Mr Bruem said the Under 14's would have made it into the finals as they finished in third place.
