You can expect to see around 30 hang gliders take to the skies from Monday, January 18, 2021 for their first practise day of the competition.

The Championships officially begin on Tuesday, January 19 and will run until Tuesday, January 26.

The Forbes Flatlands Hang Gliding Championships are split into two separate classes which are the open class and the sports class.

Event Organiser Vicki Cain said they will not have any pilots travelling from overseas, but people can expect the winner of last year's Open Class, Hungarian pilot Attila Bertok, to return to defend his title.

Ms Cain said Attila is able to defend his title as he is an Australian resident.

Event organisers are also expecting a variety of Australian pilots who have won previous Championships including Jonny Durand and Rory Duncan.

Next year's Forbes Flatlands Hang Gliding Championships is set to start later than in previous years, Ms Cain said, as when they started planning for the event borders between states were still closed and they wanted to have the best chance for them to reopen.

Along with hoping that borders would be open by January, Ms Cain said they also wanted to time the start of their competition so it would not conflict with the Corryong Cup Hang Gliding Competition in Victoria.

Ms Cain said they are hoping that the weather conditions around the region will be favourable for the championships over the new dates.

The Championships will take place at "Bill's Paddock" fondly named 'Bill Moyes International', north of the Forbes Airport and will have its headquarters at the Vandenberg Hotel.

With the change in dates, Ms Cain said they are looking for houses to rent for their pilots over the competition.
