Event organisers said this year's competition, which was scheduled to begin today (Monday), would not be viable as they would be without pilots from South Australia, Victoria, Queensland and Sydney's northern beaches due to earlier state border closures and Covid restrictions.
This is the first year in the last 15 years that the Forbes Flatlands Hang Gliding Championships has not taken place.
They draw pilots from all over the world, but had this year planned to go ahead with some 30 entrants from within Australia.
While the event may be cancelled, Event Organiser Vicki Cain said people can still expect to see some some hang gliders in the air.
Ms Cain said some pilots will be heading out to Forbes for recreational flights from Sunday to Wednesday, and potentially longer, weather permitting.
The hang gliders usually launch from "Bill's Paddock", just north of the Forbes Airport.
Ms Cain said that while they may not be hosting the competition this year they intend to come back next year bigger and better.
Despite not hosting a competition this year, Ms Cain said they would like to thank the Forbes community, the Forbes Shire Council and the Forbes Aero Club for all of their support over the years.
