Now the event is celebrating a remarkable 100-year milestone and there's a "past and present" reunion planned for the weekend of September 25 and 26.
The annual sports day dates back to 1921, and in those early years it also included horse races and dances as well as what sounds like some fiercely-contested sports.
By 1923 the Advocate reported, "Wirrinya people have a reputation of doing things properly, and this effort promises to be quite on a par, if not better, than its predecessors".
We're pretty sure, a few generations on, the folk at Wirrinya still know how to put on a good weekend!
Organisers are all those with connections to the community to save the date to return to Wirrinya later this year - and it wouldn't hurt to dig out those old photo albums either so there are plenty of memories to be shared at the time.
Tami Stewart, a former president of the Wirrinya Progress Association that runs the day, would love to hear from you.
"We are hoping all the community and families that lived or worked at Wirrinya over the years will come back for the reunion," Tami Stewart said.
Events are planned to start at the ski dam on the Saturday with a lunch and biscuit rides, before an invitation back to the old Wirrinya school to share memories and stories.
On Saturday evening there will be tea and entertainment at the Wirrinya Shed.
Sunday, September 26, will see a whole day of fun and activities we've come to expect from this event.
Plans include running races and lolly drop just to name a few.
It will be a chance to renew acquaintances, celebrate good memories and make some new ones too.
Anyone who has photos or information about the history of the day should contact Tami via email on tami.james@bigpond.com or by phoning 0427 552 243.
