The autumnal weather may have been a little cooler than previous weeks, but there was certainly a briskness in the steps of the Forbes golfers as they enjoyed their golf. This seemed to bring enjoyment equally to each other.

The Saturday comp on 10 April was the Monthly Medal, sponsored by the 'Roadies' group of Grayson, French, Earl and M Haley. The field of 72 spaced themselves across the morning, with more players enjoying the mid-morning sunshine. This may have led to an overall evenness in the scoring, with seemingly no real advantage to early or later starters.
The A-Grade did not have many scores under par, perhaps indicating that scoring was not all that easy. The winner, Harry Callaghan, started with a triple bogey but recovered to finish with a birdie on the last hole. In between that his score of 68 nett was compiled with a few ups and downs but was generally well constructed.
Runner-up was Clint Hurford, who again missed out on the medal by one shot. His 69 nett was similar but different to Harry's round. An untidy front-9 was coupled to a near perfect back-9, but alas a bogey on the 18th tipped him into the bridesmaid's role again.
The B-Grade had a similar story with only five players finishing under par. Barry Parker relished playing in a new group, and finished with a nett 68. He played steadily throughout, blitzing the others in the group and taking the 'KENO' money.
Runner-up was Tony Wallace. He was playing in a group with Steve Betland, and drew inspiration from his easy style. A very good start on the front-9 was unfortunately let down by a few blemishes on the back-9, but he managed to hold it together for a 69 nett.
The story was the same in the C-Grade with only six players finishing under par, and a similar winning result. Bruce Squires seems to do well in the important events, and this time was no exception. A very even front and back score resulted in a nett 68. His mantra of scoring 1-over each hole was good, except on the last hole where a double bogey resulted.
Runner-up was Tom Toohey, who is really cutting his handicap down even though he feels as if he is playing poorly. Tom's round was a good-bad experience where he was steady on the front but slipped a bit in the later stages of his round to finish with a nett 69. His undoubted highlight was a '2' on the 9th hole.
The ball sweep went to 74 nett on count back, going to: 70 - D Bernardi, K Sanderson, T Morgan, A Dukes, J Haley; 71 - B Chandler, L Little, Alf Davies, N Ryan; 72 - R Webb, J Bernardi, P Cowhan; 73 - D Kennedy, S Betland, P Pymont, M Duff, P Maher, B Everest; 74 - D Clarke, B Thomas.
The only visitor was Stuart Hayes (Murrumbidgee) who just missed out on a ball on count back.
The NTP's went to: 9th - T Toohey, 18th - H Callaghan. Both players can thank good putting to add gloss to this achievement, as both got their 2's. The seven 2's were spread across the grades and the holes, although the 1st was 2-less.
The 3rd Hole Pro Shop Super Pin went to Harry Callaghan, but did not result in a '2'. Again, the shot was about 2 metres from the hole, which seems to be about average these days. This was one of many highlights for Harry's day.
Calamity does befall golfers during a round, and on our course you can usually see this happen on the same holes time and again. This is true for David Sly who has a very intense relationship with the 7th hole. Once again his round was spoilt by a larger than intended score on this hole. His '9' had a number of components to it, so share a drink with him with your hankie ready.
Another to befall this scenario was Greg Webb. Over the last few weeks he was well pleased with having conquered the 15th hole. But this week it bit back, causing him to record a '10' which added to his bat raising final score.
Every now and then in the 'calamitous tales' library something different occurs. This week the 2nd and 10th holes caught many players out. An unusual number of players recorded double-figures on the 2nd hole, with the worst being a '12' by Sam Rogers. He sits beside David Sly as they reminisce.
The 10th caused problems for players also. While 7's are commonplace, a few double-digits appeared. Frank Donohoe had the wildest story, carding an '11' on that hole.
With the introduction of the new scorecards, the 'banana cards', it is more difficult to determine the Scatter-Gun Card award. However, Stephen Uphill must be commended for making life easier for his scorer. Stephen has 6's and 4's on his front-9, and a run of eight 5's on his back-9, making the computation of his score very easy.
The Sunday Stableford Medley had a small field, with many perhaps discouraged by the cool change.
The winner was Jacob Bernardi with 35 points. A promising start was countered by a slightly blemished back-9, where he had a run of 5's before a par-4 on the 17th, and finished with a par on the last.
Runner-up was Ethel Coombs with 31 points. Ethel enjoys her Sunday game and usually comes away with some kind of reward. There were no NTP's.
Here is the news:
The draw for the Wallace Cup will be made soon, so keep an eye on the Notice board to see when it all starts and who you are drawn to play. Remember that we must keep this on a tight schedule.

This Sunday we have scheduled a 3-P Ambrose. This is something different, and will follow normal Ambrose rules. Get a team together and enjoy the day. Teams of Mens, Ladies and Mixed players are allowed, with the overall participation determining the distribution of prizes.
