With becoming sunshine and an emerald green golf course, the golfers were encouraged to not only enjoy the ambience but also to play well. And that they did, on what we can perhaps call our 'Little Augusta'.

Saturday's comp saw the holding of the Annual Kristie Carpenter Perpetual Trophy Day, sponsored by the Terry Griffiths and Veronica Rebellato. A bountiful field of 103 players welcomed the opportunity to remember Kristie and to show support to the family. The 92 men and 11 Ladies were spread across the day, with nobody gaining any real respite from the mozzies.
The Overall Winner for the Trophy was Phil Maher, with an inspired 45 points. He had purple patches on both 9's that ensured his success. He was especially pleased on two counts. It was his best ever personal score, and it was his birthday.
The Division 1 contest was keenly fought for the minor placings, with Phil Maher leaving them all in his wake. Phil's split of 22-23-45 points was built on scoring points on every hole. His run of 13 points in four holes on the front-9 was supported by a 4-pointer and three 3-pointers on the back-9.
The runner-up was determined by count back between five players, all on 39 points, with Paul Pymont taking the prize. Paul had a steady front-9 but fired up well and truly on the back-9 with a bevy of '2' and '3' pointers. Each of this bunch had their chances, but a par on the 13th stalled Caleb Hanrahan's day, while a miss by Matt Roylance on the 17th undid him. Paul's performance to score on every hole paid dividends.
The Div-2 results had a similar story, with Jake Shaw ahead of the pack on 43 points. Despite a miss on a hole in each '9', Jake's only other blemish was a 1-pointer on the 10th. Otherwise he compiled his score with 2's and 3's, and much encouragement from Harry Callaghan.
The Runner-up on count back, with 39 points, was Riley Pike. He also scored points on every hole, giving him the advantage over Tom Toohey who had a 'miss' on the 12th. Riley was a model of consistency throughout, with his only blemishes being 1-pointers on the 9th and 18th holes.
The Ladies provided a good tussle for their honours, requiring a count back to decide the winner. Both Sally Crosby and Lindy Pollock finished on 35 points. They had reverse games with Sally starting slowly but finishing strongly, and Lindy starting well but fading towards the end. This, along with two 'misses' by Lindy gave Sally the nod for the spoils.
The Mens ball sweep went to 33 points on count back, going to: 39 - C Hanrahan, M Roylance, S French, T Toohey, M Bayley; 38 - B Slack-Smith, F Hanns; 36 - D Noll, M Collits, B Thomas, D McGroder; 35 - D Doig, L O'Connor, T Morgan, B Byrnes; 34 - J Betland, M Wood, N Ryan, A Grierson, T Cogswell, L Baker; 33 - M Haley, S Uphill, P Duke, D Earl, D Lickess.
The Ladies ball sweep went to: 34 - V Rebellato, 33 - B Duncan.
The visitors included Dave Doig (L Cargelligo), D Noll and B Byrnes (Condobolin), Chris Fealy (W/W), Rob Hey, Wayne Powter, Aaron Wilkie, Riall Harrison, Dave Brown and Ken Cobcroft (Parkers), and Ray Sanderson. Most of them did well.
The NTP's went to: 9th - Men B Thomas, Ladies S Crosby; 18th - Men M Collits, Ladies Nil. The pins were in easy locations, which should have resulted in quite a few birdies, especially with the large field. But alas only 10 were scored, with the majority on the 3rd. Bruce Chandler can be pleased with his rare '2' on the 1st.
The Super Pin on the 3rd hole this week went to Dave Sly with a shot that finished 1.8 metres from the hole. But he missed his '2'. There were four previous contenders who started at 7.490 metres then dropped into the 3 metre and 2 metre range.
A few players were beset by a new affliction. This manifests itself in players having a downward stance, a vacant look in their eyes, and a rising internal temperature. This affliction is commonly known as 'double-bogeyitis'. Paul Kay had a very serious case of it, but managed to win the 10th and 17th holes for his partner.
An anomalous hazard is one which lurks around the greens all day, but is rarely spoken of. But this week there were a number of occurrences. The sprinkler heads around the greens often interfere with putting and chipping lines. But Andrew Grierson had one better.
His approach shot to the 2nd green was on line and arcing beautifully. It struck the green then seemed to disappear. On arriving at the green Andrew found his ball wedged beside a sprinkler head, in the hole and in what was a rare slam dunk.
Stevie G had a similar situation on the 5th green. Then he watched as his ball rolled off the back of the 18th green to be stopped by the irrigation control box.
Terry Griffiths enjoyed his day playing alongside Veronica Rebellato, Verna Lane and Andrew Grierson. But he thought he was going to have problems on the 4th hole when his drive was well short of the trees on the corner.
Undaunted, Terry tried to cut the corner and while he found a few branches he went forward, and into the water. Taking a penalty, he played his fourth shot and found the green, then the hole for a 'standard' par.
On Sunday a 3-Person Ambrose Medley was played, just as a change from the Stableford Medleys. The sunny weather brought out many players, both members and non-members, with the field comprising 39 players.
Scratch scores ranged markedly but all nett scores were below par. The next hurdle was to get really low.
The winning group of Kyle Sharp, Jake Fleming and Isaac Vale combined really well to score 59 1/6 nett. Not far behind in Runner-up were A Davies, J Davies, M Skeene with 59 1/2 nett, off a pretty similar handicap of a nudge over 10.
The ball sweep went to 60 5/6 and covered three other groups. Check in the Pro Shop to see if you can claim a ball. The NTP's went to: 9th - J Betland, 18th - P Dawson. Peter's shot was level with the pin, nearly off the side and quite some distance away. We can only assume that all other shots were well short and towards the front of the green.
Here is the news:
