The decision was made in a closed council meeting - the resolution reported in the draft minutes now published on the council website - but Mayor Phyllis Miller has explained the department has outgrown the former State Bank building in Lachlan Street.
"We have been a long time without a full complement of staff in our engineering department," she said.
With recent recruitment success, the department is now fully staffed and it couldn't have come at a better time given the number of projects on the go around Forbes.
"With COVID we've seen a real surge in people coming out from the city to the country," Mayor Miller said.
The department includes design teams, surveyors and business managers.
It's a busy team at the moment with record capital expenditure budgets resulting from grant funding and Mayor Miller says they do need to relocate.
The entire department will relocate to the rental office on Sherriff Street, overlooking the lake, for now.
"This is a just a short-term fix," Mayor Miller said.
"We have got our eye on another property that will be council owned."
The draft minutes record the council resolved to list 137 - 141 Lachlan Street for sale.
