The weekend semi-finals saw two completely different results, the first one-sided while the other came down to the last end.
In the first John Cutler led for Russell Hodge and skip Lindsay Willding cruising home 43-7 against Cliff Nelson, Sid Morris and Scotty McKellar.
The Willding combination won all but four ends leading 17-6 at 'oranges' then only dropping a single which came on the last end of 20.
One the other end of the spectrum skip 'Bert' Bayley took victory from the jaws of defeat on the last end for lead Viv Russell and second Greg Gunn winning 22-20 over Christian West, Glenn Kearney and Geoff Williams.
The teams traded blow for blow during the 25 ends played, 8-all after eight ends, 14-all after 16, 16-all after 19 prior to Bayley's leading 21-18 after 23. William's won the next two ends with twos to trail by one before 'Bert' sealed the victory with winning single.
The final will see supporters of both combinations confident of victor where all agree those 'on their game' with a little luck sure to claim the major trophy.
In a Minor Pairs semi final Joe and Geoff Nicholson had 'walk in the park' winning 32-9 against Denny Byrnes and Bob Grant in the 21 end game.
Winning the first five ends to lead 11-0 set the scene before Denny and Bob posted four on the next three ends for 11-4. The Nicholson's kicked up a gear to lead 26-4 after fourteen ends to seal the family win.
The Nicholson's now await an elimination then quarter final before they know their semi final opponents.
Drawn up and ready to commence are the A and B Pairs, Minor Triples and the Bentick Trophy.
Starting tomorrow (Friday) is the evening social competition with names in by 6.30pm for a 7pm start. The ever popular week ending game will be followed by a BBQ all for the minimal cost of $10.
Other schedule bowls competition are scheduled for Wednesday morning, Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning. All welcome to play in these with full details available from the club on 6852 1499.
Before a bowl can be delivered the Sports and Recreation Club needs a guiding light as to the running of the game and what is expected of members, and guests, when it comes to facilities and amenities in the clubhouse.
Members of the 'Bowlie' can have their say on both by attending the Annual General Meeting of the club on Sunday October 31 from 1pm.
Current club president Peter Mackay and his committee have achieved way above what most would expected in these covid testing times. In his AGM report Peter quite rightly stated this would not have be achieved with the support of sub-committees and members who 'do their bit' to help out in a variety of ways.
Book in Sunday October 31 from 1pm to continue this support and if any questions you feel need answering this will be the time to speak up.
Also on the agenda in a slightly more social aspect Trevor Currey is calling for any member looking to purchase a new bowls shirt to leave you name on the sheet located on the bowls board sooner then later. Orders for these close on Saturday October 30.
Wednesday bowls: Bill Parslow may have only been playing Wednesday bowls for around a month and last week tasted success for the first time on the greens playing second for the trio of lead Noel Jolliffe and skip Paul Doust.
They held all the aces to dominate winning 13-5 over Fred Vogelsang, John Cutler and Cliff Nelson in a game lasting 14 ends.
The Doust combo won the first two ends 3-0 and never looked back where a game of tight ends only saw one score of three and two ends of two. The rest were singles.
Twenty six played last Wednesday where most of the other games were also slightly one sided. John Brown is another 'new' bowler to Wednesday competition making inroads to success teaming with Grant Lambert winning 24-16 over Barry White and John Kennedy in a game lasting 20 ends.
They lost the first two ends 5-0 before fighting back for 8-all after seven ends to then win the next five ends 15-0 for 23-8. A funny game is bowls as in the next eight ends they could only score a single. Still a comfortable win.
Trevor Currey and Laurie Crouch know their way around the green and combined well to win 19-9 over Laurie Spackman and Ron McKay. 5-0 after three told the story for the winners to keep the foot on the pedal leading 12-3 after eight then 14-8 after 14 before 5-1 over the last four ends.
Another 19-9 result saw Bill O'Connell and Alf Davies triumph over David Williams and Barry Shine over 20 ends. It was two-all after three then 9-6 after 10 ends. A feature of the game was 14 ends of single scores.
Geoff Coles did all skip Kerry Dunstan asked resulting in a 22-13 win over Geoff West and John Gorton over 18 ends. It was 11-3 after seven ends prior to Geoff and John showing some fight to bridge the gap to 13-10 after 13, five on the next two ends had Geoff and Kerry looking good.
In the last game, over 20 ends, Denny Byrnes and Tony Bratton ran out 23-13 winners over Michael Coles and Lyall Strudwick. 13-1 after eight told the story, however, Michael and Lyall did fight back to win the 'second half' 12-9. All too late for a win.
In-house winners for the Flint St Butchery vouchers were Alf Davies and Trevor Currey.
Trevor Currey, one of the organising faces of Wednesday bowls said last week their annual Christmas party for those who show some and 'not so some' skills are advised Santa and his helpers will be playing host on Wednesday December 8. Bowls from 10am, lunch from 12.30pm.
Wednesday morning bowls is open to all and an ideal time to refresh your past talents or for those thinking of taking up the great game. Noms before 9.30am for a 10am start.
