The clue for the four letter answer read "Steele's wife", and it was referring to 26-year-old woman, Remy Spillane from NSW's Hunter region.

Her boyfriend Steele Harvey commissioned The Herald to include the clue as a way to propose to his girlfriend of six years in their weekly Saturday morning ritual.

"So we went for a picnic in at King Edward Park and we were just having some food and doing the crossword together," Steele said.

"She was just sort of doing the puzzles from side to side and then she saw the clue.

"She's like, 'Oh, Steele's wife? That's weird'.

"She's trying to think of famous people named Steele and and then she's like 'wait Remy fits', and then that's when I got on one knee."

In a fitting feature, the giant crossword also had two related clues in the top right corner. The first vertical clue was a three letter word for 'marry', which corresponded with the first horizontal clue, a five letter answer to finish the phrase 'for better, for ...".

But fair to say, Remy was a tad shocked after the proposal and the idea of finishing the crossword quickly went out the window. Thankfully, she said yes.

"She couldn't believe it," Steele said.

"She was caught off guard. Yeah, she wasn't expecting it at all, which was good."

The couple, who met at high school when they were both in year 7, have been doing the weekend newspaper crossword together for about two years.

It was during one of their regular Saturday morning activities that Steele had a light bulb moment.

"I went in and paid for the ring one day, and then we were doing the crossword the next day," he said.

"I was thinking about the ring and then the idea sort of came to me."

But after committing to the idea, Steele was then focused on it all going to plan.

"I was so stressed," he said.

"I'd been having the worst sleeps and just thinking everything could go wrong.

"But it just ran really smoothly, so I was very relieved."
