MINOR CHAMPIONSHIPS – Closing out round two games this weekend the Minor Singles are flying through.
Ange Dwyer and Ron Thurlow battled it out on Sunday for their chance to move through. Ange off to a flying start leading 8-0 on 5. Ron was able to pick up the next three ends gaining a 3 which closed the gap 8-5. 17-8 to Ange on 13, Ron dug deep and started his comeback. 22-20 to Ange, Ron certainly made a fantastic comeback, and the game could go either way. Ange was lucky to win the last two ends for a 25-20 victory.
Brett Davenport was the victor when he played against John Cutler. 6 all on 5 this was shaping up to be a battle til the end. Brett skipped ahead after winning the next 5 ends in a row to lead 16-9. Cutler was not rolling over yet taking the next two ends to only trail by 3, 13-16. Luck was on Bretts side when he took the last 4 ends to win the game 26-13.
Early start on Saturday morning for Kerry Roach and Shayne “Sharka” Staines game kicking off at 9.30am. With the dew still on the greens it was a heavy start but that didn’t seem to bother Sharka picking up a 4 on the 2nd. Kerry answered back, levelling the score 8 all on 8. Keeping things nice and close 12 all on 12, Kerry was able to just edge in front on 16, leading 17-14. Kery winning 4 of the last 6 ends, she was able to take the win 25-18.
Cliff Nelson one of our most consistent players, drew Clint Hurford in the singles match. Clint off to a great start lead 10-4 on 8. Cliff played two absolute bombs in the next 2 ends and picked up 3 in each end to level 10 all on 10. Clint was wiping the sweat off his brow and had to pull out the stops and that’s what he did. Clint answered back gaining 6 over the next two ends to lead slightly 16-11. Clint put his foot flat to the floor to the finish line and won 25-11.
In the last marathon to battle it out for their chance to move through and played over 28 ends were Cherie Vincent and Phil Hocking. Phil stamped his position early leading by 1 on the 4th. Cherie levelled to make it 5 all on 5. Cherie was picking up ones until Phil scored a 3 to lead 8-6. Cherie was determined and took the next 4 ends to lead 16-8. Phil started his chase and 2 points the difference on 25 with Cherie leading 23-21. 23 all on the second last end Cherie picked up a 2 to win the game 25-23.
WEDNESDAY BOWLS- During the summer some called it too hot to play bowls but with a taste of winter it must have been too cold as there were only 22 players who turned out to play last Wednesday morning.
Winners on the day were Lesley Dunstan and Bob Grant who had a very good 22-11win against Eddie Gould and Cliff Nelson. Eddie and Cliff started off well to lead 8-1 after five ends. Then the wheels fell off as they never scored again for nine ends at which time Lesley and Bob lead 15-8. Eddie and Cliff just got into double figures before the game ended with the winners taking the game 22-11.
The runners up on the day were Sid Morris and Ross Williams with an 18-8-win over Ann Mackay and Bill O’Connell. At the fourth end Ann and Bill picked up two shots to be down 2-5. But, again the wheels fell off because they never scored a shot for ten ends at which time Sid and Ross put their cue in the rack, and they never scored another shot. Unfortunately, they were too far ahead for Ann and Bill to run them down.
In the other pairs games, Sue Smith and Noel Jolliffe defeated Bill Scott and Kerry Dunstan 19-14. At the fifth end Sue and Noel lead 6-0 and at the thirteenth end they lead 14-7. Over the next seven ends Sid and Noel scored 5 shots to Bill and Kerry’s 7 but it was all too late as the game was over.
In the last of the pairs games Colleen Leibich and Bill Cowell showed a clean pair of heels downing Irene Riley and Don Craft 18-11. Irene and Don were never in the race and at the thirteenth end they were behind 4-15. It was only over the last six ends that they picked up enough shots to make the score respectful.
In the game of triples Phil Hocking, Ann Nixon and Laurie Crouch had an 18-11 win over Barry White, Terese Davis and Peter MacKay. Peter’s team started the scoring off and at the nineth end lead 8-7. Unfortunately for then Laurie’s team picked up ten shots on the next two ends. Peter’s team was unable to bridge the gap in time losing the game 11-18.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Thursday – 16 Players took to the greens on Thursday afternoon for social bowls, 4 games of pairs were played.
Billy Cowell and Al Phillips drew Ange Dwyer and Laurie Crouch. Al and Billy started strong and led 13-2 on 10. Ange and Laurie were able to win the next 3 ends, but Billy and Al picked up a lucky 5 to extend their lead 18-7 on 13. 5’s are rare but to win another 5 on 14, Billy and Al were certainly blessed and won the game 28-13.
Ivan Hodges and Bob Grant came up against Alan Hilder and Viv Russell. Alan and Viv lead 15-2 on 8 when Ivan and Bobby won 7 points on the next 3 ends to close the gap 11-15. Edging closer to Alan and Viv’s score but they just couldn’t quite get there, overall score 27-16 to Alan and Viv.
Jason Howell and Cherie Vincent were the victors against Max Vincent and Cliff Nelson. There was no slowing Jason and Cherie down right from the start 7-3 on 6, 16-7 on 13. Max and Cliff were able to get to double figures at 17 ends but couldn’t catch Jason and Cherie 23-13 the final score.
Terry Molloy and Bruce “Posso” Jones were on fire when they played Dale Maynard and Dale Scott. With the final scoreboard showing 32-14, Terry and Posso lead all the way from the start. 14-4 on 8, 20-5 on 13 and then winning 6 points on the next two ends 26-5 on 15. The Dales were able to pick up a 5 on the 19th but the gap was unreachable.

Resting Touchers: Viv Russell and raspberry for the wrong bias was awarded to Al Phillips.
Sunday – with three competition games being played at the same time we still had 22 bowlers for Sunday Social Bowls.
Our Triples game was played by Terry Murphy, Trish Todd and Dale Scott teaming up against Billy Cowell, Tyler Murphy and Peter Tisdell. Peters team lead 6-2 at half time keeping their opponents scoreless until the 5th end. Coming back from the break Peters team first end win they picked up a 6 which definitely helped increase their lead to win the game 17-7.
Jax Murphy and Peter Mackay gave it their all when they played Peter Greenhaulgh and Alan Hilder. 9-1 Peter and Alans way on 7, Jax and Peter scored a 4 to trail 5-9 at halftime. Coming out swinging Jax and Peter won the next end, but Peter and Alan came back to take the next 5 out of 7 to win the game 20-11.
Johny Gorton led John Cutler when they played Terry Molloy and Viv Russell. Nice and even 4 all on 7, Terry and Viv scored a 4 to lead the board at oranges. The Johns were able to pick up a 3 and a 4 in the second half to only trail by 1, 11-12. Terry and Viv lead 14-13 on the second last end but the Johns took the last end to draw the game 14 all.
Joyce Gray teamed with Al Phillips when they drew against Darryl Burley and Robert “Pooch” Dukes. Joyce and Alan lead 5-1 on 4, 14-2 on 8. What seemed like a big target to chase Darryl and Pooch won 5 of the last 8 ends but couldn’t quite catch them with Joyce and Al winning the game 19-12.
Our newest bowler to Sunday morning bowls, Joe McLinden lead for the very experienced Bert Bayley when they drew Dale Maynard and John Kennedy. 7 all on 6, 8 all at the break this could go either way. Dale and John kept their opponents scoreless for the next 6 ends when Joe and Bert won the last two but couldn’t match the scoreboard. Dale and John victors 18-12.

Resting Touchers: John Kennedy and Raspberry for wrong bias were awarded to Joe McLinden and Joyce Gray.
Rink 11 was drawn for their chance at the Jackpot draw of $538.00, Unfortunately they needed a 7 and drew an 8. Jackpot will increase next week.
