BOWLS
By TARA SHAW
Last week saw one of our longest bowlers and his wife celebrate his 60th Wedding Anniversary. Congratulations to Jenny and Ray Drabsch. We wish you many more happy years to come.
Well it happened, the Minor Singles 2025 Club Champion has been crowned.
Robert “Pooch” Dukes, runner up in 2024, has taken the gold this year against Geoff Brown.
Latest Stories
Mate against mate, both players were going to give it their all in front of many spectators showing their support for this final.
Pooch started off well and picking up a 4 on the second certainly boosted his confidence and had Geoff a little worried.
Geoff gained a single shot on the 3rd and was on the board.
Pooch put his foot flat to the floor and was not backing off at all, not even a little. 16-3 on 11, then gaining another 7 points on the next 3, Geoff had his work cut out for him.
Pooch was leading 24-3 on 15 and only needed 1 to finish the game.
As most will say, trying to get 1 point is the hardest. Geoff managed to pick up a 3 on the 16th but Pooch answered with a 3 on the 17th to win the game.
Talk around the greens during and following the game was “the score did not reflect the game at all, neither of the players could afford to relax or take it easy at any point in the game”.
Congratulations to both players on a great game.
Don’t forget about our social super Saturday this Saturday 21 June. The annual North Forbes vs South Forbes has been rehashed and will happen this week. Names in by 12.30 for a 1pm start, who will claim bragging rights this year?
SOCIAL BOWLS
Wednesday – Mother Nature was the winner last week where no drawn games were played due to the miserable weather.
However there was one game of social play where Cheryl Hodges, Dale Scott and Kerry Dunstan tested their skills taking on Tim Everest, Noel Jolliffe and Paul Doust.
Interesting to note at the time of print no score card while also worth noting two regular Wednesday players in Paul Doust ad Kerry Dunstan are real winner ‘boys’ with no feel whatsoever for the winter chill.
As Kerry commented, “The sun was out at 10, a lovely day.” For some.
Worth remembering social competition bowls are played every Wednesday morning, Thursday afternoon and Sunday morning. All are invited to have a roll on any of these days, phone the club on 6851 1499 for full details.
Thursday - The weather was certainly kinder to us on Thursday afternoon for social bowls with 22 players taking to the greens.
Paul Doust getting in one more game before he travels for the next two months to WA lead for Cherie Vincent when they played our returning vistor from Merimbula, Grant Stevensen and Lyall Strudwick.
Grant and Lyall started out well then Paul and Cherie found their groove. 9-4 on 10, 12-7 on 16, Paul and Cherie needed some big numbers to catch up but was unsuccessful with Grant and Lyall taking the win 15-11.
Also getting in one last game before departing Forbes was Mandi Stevenson who played with Scott McKellar against Jason Howell and Glen Kearney.
This game was our biggest margin rink when Jason and Glen kept their opposition from getting to double figures. Jason and Glen gained two 5’s which contributed to their 38-9 win.
Laurie Crouch and Alan Hilder drew Phil Hocking and Al Phillips. 8 points the difference on Rink 14, Phil and Al leading all the way. 13-7 on 11, 18-12 on 17.
Laurie and Alan were able to win the last two ends but couldn’t close the gap going down 14-22.
The triples game was played between Ivan Hodges, Max Vincent and Peter Hocking against Billy Cowell, Noel Hocking and Posso Jones. Hockings team started on fire with a 5 on the first and then lead 11-3 on 7. Posso’s team picked up 2 3’s and a 4 to catapult them to the lead 13-11. Just hanging onto the lead Posso’s team won 17-16.
Lyndy Bokeyar and Dale Scott paired against Ange Dwyer and Wayne Burton. Ange and Wayne had a handy lead 11-3 on 9 but the train started to derail after that. Lyndy and Dale taking the next 5 ends to nudge in front 12-11. Ange and Wayne weren’t throwing in the towel just yet and finished the game 16 all draw.
Winning Rink went to Jason Howell and Glen Kearney, Losing Rink went to Lyndy Bokeyar, Dale Scott, Ange Dwyer and Wayne Burton.
No resting touchers recorded however Max Vincent, Grant Stevenson and Posso Jones threw done a bitter sweet Raspberry and lemonade for their wrong bias.
Jackpot was won by Max Vincent.
Sunday – There were a few iffy clouds around with some earlier showers but 20 bowlers through their hat in the ring and waited to see.
A few more showers on and off throughout the morning, some rinks braved the weather and continued play whilst others took refuge inside the warm club.
Daryl Burley and Al Phillips played Ange Dwyer and Jax Murphy. First time skipping for Jax he did well over their 8 ends played. 3 all on 5 and Daryl and Al picked up two of the last 3 ends to win 7-4.
Tyler Murphy lead for Mick Merritt against Trish Todd and Bert Bayley. This rink went the distance and Tyler and Mick lead 9-7 at the break.
Going back out Trish and Bert levelled on 9 to 9 all. 10 all on 11, 13 all on 13, powering through the sprinkle of rain Trish and Bert won the game by 1 point, 16-15.
Kelly Stringer and Cherie Vincent drew Terry Murphy and Kerry Roach. Another rink braving mother nature Kelly and Cherie lead 12-6 at oranges.
Going back out, Kelly wanted bragging rights over Terry and that she got. Scoring a 5 on 10 certainly helped but Terry and Kerry scored a 5 on the second last end to trail 15-22.
Dale Maynard and Bobby Grant teamed up against Noel Hocking and Alan Hilder. The score card showed 5 all over 6 games played.
Joyce Gray led for John Cutler verse Max Vincent and Billy Cowell. When the first heavier shower came through these guys retreated to the club, they called it quits after 4 ends. Max and Billy were leading 7-0 at the time.
Winning Rink – Rink 3, Trish Todd and Bert Bayley. Losing Rink – Rink 2, Ange Dwyer and Jax Murphy.
Resting touchers: Baryl Burley, Kelly Stringer and Cherie Vincent. Raspberries: Terry Murphy and Trish Todd.
Jackpot was won by Joyce Gray.
Chicken raffle winners: Noel Hocking, Dick Sharkey, Al Phillips, Jax Murphy, Alan Hilder, Luke Stacey, Joyce Gray, Ange Dwyer and Bill Hayes.
