Hilltops Councillor Column

There was lots to see and do at the Young Show on Sunday.

I was pleased to be there to witness Rural Ambassador for Young, Councillor Jake Davis, carrying out his official duties.

We are fortunate to have a Councillor like Jake who gives up his time to contribute to our community.

More than just Dagwood dogs, rides and showbags, agricultural shows play a vital role in regional communities – helping people connect, build relationships, exchange

knowledge, and support local businesses.

My congratulations to Emma Goodsell and her committee on delivering another successful Show.

Also, over the weekend, we received very exciting news from Wagga, where our very own Cherry Bombs took out the first ever Group 9 Women’s Tackle Grand Final.

What a fantastic achievement - well done!

Council, with funding support from the Commonwealth Government, is delivering a stormwater drainage upgrade for Young.

The aim of the upgrade is to improve the drainage system within the town centre of Young and help prevent flooding during major storm events.

The works include the construction of a drainage channel within the railway corridor and the installation of two large-diameter pipes along Lynch Street and Marina Street. The stormwater will then discharge into Burrangong Creek.

Construction has now commenced and is expected to take up to eight months to complete.

As the upgrade stretches from one side of Young to the other, some disruption for businesses, pedestrians, and vehicles is expected.

These impacts will be minor, and I ask for your patience – please consider the businesses that have been impacted by flash flooding multiple times a year during storm events.

Council is currently calling for applications from community organisations seeking financial assistance or sponsorship from Council during 2025-2026.

The Hilltops Council Financial Assistance and Sponsorship Program recognises the valuable contribution that community groups and organisations make to the development of our region.

Council provides this support to encourage and assist these groups to continue their positive work.

I encourage all community organisations and sporting groups to apply.

Applications and supporting information must be submitted on the prescribed forms which are available at Council offices and on Council’s website at https://www.hilltops.nsw.gov.au/services/hilltops-financial-assistance-and-sponsorshipprograms/ and applications close midnight, Friday 31 October 2025.
