Canowindra’s public schools celebrate 150 years of public education

Canowindra schools are celebrating a milestone year: 50 years of Canowindra High School and 150 years since the opening of Canowindra Public.

Canowindra Public School's Principal Sharon Hawker said this is a huge achievement for the school, celebrating with a combined assembly at Canowindra High and the launch of 'The Past Fifty Years of Public Education in Canowindra 1975 – 2025'.

The book compliments a centenary edition of 1975.

Changes in technology and what it means teachers and students can do in the learning space are the biggest differences in Ms Hawker’s time – and in the two books.

Ms Hawker said the curriculum has changed over the years and they have the ability to focus and differentiate for their students a little easier now, which has been a good change.

The original school site for Canowindra Public School was built out on the Belubula Way, before the school was relocated to its current location in 1891, with works improving and expanding the buildings and site ever since.

It operated as a central school in the mid-1900s, teaching students up to Year 10, before the Canowindra High School was built in 1975.

Canowindra High School Principal Brad Robinson said it was really interesting to see what had changed since the introduction of public schooling in Canoiwndra 150 years ago, and how much things have changed, even in the last 50 years since the High School was built.

"There was a school here before telephones existed, the bicycle didn't exist in Australia, they didn't come for another three years," he said.

"Things that we take for granted here now, that we think are forever things didn't exist then and I think 50 years ago, it's the same."

Even though the technology has changed, Mr Robinson said the goal of educating and improving the education of students had not changed.
