The pilot program asks residents to buy one extra non-perishable item of food each week when they purchase their groceries and donate it to the Salvation Army Family Store in Rankin Street.
The idea of the program is to gather enough food items to be put together into a hamper for families in need.
Forbes Salvation Army officer Donna Munro said it’s a great way to support those in the community that have less.
“It really helps if people can dig deep and give a little bit back to the community,” she said.
“It’s a way of making a difference and putting a smile someone’s face.”
“There are a lot of people at Christmas who might be on their own and there is nothing better than seeing that smile on their face.”
Mrs Munro said the Salvation Army still have enough toys from last year so are just asking for food donations.
The organisation is also looking for volunteers to help make the hampers.
This year they are asking people to register beforehand for insurance purposes.
If you have a food item or would like to register to volunteer you can contact the Forbes Salvation Army on 6852 2133.
Alternatively the Parkes Salvation Army at 33 Church Street is also accepting donations.
