Ben, who moved to Melbourne several years ago to pursue his graphic design career, is the drummer with country rock band The Wild Comforts.
They’ve recently released their second album, The Silver City Sorrows, promoted on a whirlwind tour to Brisbane and back that wrapped up Monday.
The band was lucky enough to slot in a gig in the Bill Chambers showcase at Tamworth, where Ben’s parents Geoff and Chris Drane went to see them.
The Wild Comforts connected with country music identity Bill - father of Kasey Chambers - during their album recording on the central coast.
“Bill lives in Gosford and did a lot of the mixing for their album,” Chris Drane said.
Some of the recording took place at Chambers’ studio The Boneyard and Kasey lent her vocals to the single Cossette.
“Bill has a room at The Pub in Tamworth where he has a slot every day (during the annual festival),” Chris said.
“They impressed him because he gave the guys time during his slot one day and they played four songs.”
The band - formed four years ago - was happy with their tour and response to the 10-track album.
Reviewer Jo Michelmore of “It’s my kind of scene” gave Silver City Sorrows 3.5 stars.
“It’s the tender notes and sweet-as-honey harmonies on the single ‘Cossette’ that really won me over, because that’s the one that reached the crazy part of my brain that loves the depression in a good country sad song and loves the words that are more truthful than I’d like to admit,” she wrote.
“I’m kind of upset I’ve only just heard the sweet sounds of these four Melbournians … but I’m going to make up for it now with my newest fave Australian country rock people.
“They know how to strum those guitars, hit those notes and create those sways that awesome country does.”
