This little budgie won the normal violet category at the 43rd Australian National Budgerigar Championships in Mackay.
The Pymonts have been breeding budgies for about 20 years and have represented NSW on multiple occasions, but this is their first national champion.
Although budgerigars are an Australian native, show budgies are larger than their wild cousins and bred to show standards.
Garry explains it’s the strength of this bird’s head and his directional feathers that make him a stand-out.
Points are given for size and outline, the bird must be in the right proportion to be successful.
“Competition is very strong,” Mr Pymont said.
A bird only gets one shot at the national title, as only budgerigars hatched the previous season are eligible for competition.
This bird peaked in condition at just the right time to impress the judges.
