The talented 11-year-old has come home from the Australian junior motorcycle long track championships with another three Australian titles to his name.
Tom raced 16 times over the Saturday and Sunday of competition in Mildura, taking out 13 first places and three seconds.
He came home with Australian honours in the 65cc 9-13 years; 80cc modified 10-14 years; and 85cc-150cc 9-11 years.
That makes eight Australian titles and nine State titles from the three eastern seaboard states that Tom has claimed – a jaw-dropping resume by anyone’s standards.
But it is reward for years of dedication – the now 11-year-old trains in every available minute and the family travels every weekend to race.
In just the most recent school holiday break, they went north to Brisbane at the start of the school holiday break for the Queensland titles, south to Mildura by the end of the holidays for the nationals.
Mum Lisa says the schedule is frantic, but they are happy to do it as long as Tom and younger brother Sam continue to love their racing.
“He loves it,” she said.
“He is very committed to what he does. I think he was born to race.”
They are, however, thrilled to have racing back at Daroobalgie this year.
Tom’s not fazed by the size of the kids he’s racing against or the speeds he reaches on track.
Competing against up to 14-year-olds after going up an age group last year, other placegetters often tower over him on the podium.
He did, however, take a nasty fall in the NSW dirt track titles six weeks ago.
“He came around the corner in first and just high-sided, got stuck in the dirt and went into the fence,” Lisa said.
The crowd track-side breathed a sigh of relief when the young rider got to his feet – his helmet had taken the force of the impact.
At that meeting he picked up the NSW title in 65cc and second in the 80cc modified.
He still has the NSW long-track titles coming up after the scheduled meeting was rained out.
