Mr Emery wrote to parents in the September 6 newsletter that a Newcastle Herald story last week about the emails had led to questions about what was allowed to be discussed at school.
“Issues such as moral, ethical and social justice questions are open for discussion at St Pius in a safe and non-judgemental atmosphere,” he wrote.
“Catholic school teachers do this within the context of Catholic doctrine in our Religious Studies lessons.”
Mr Emery said teachers aimed to develop “critical thinkers” and had a responsibility to present an “unbiased view” and discuss issues from different viewpoints, including the Catholic worldview.
“Teachers do not tell students what they must believe on any issue, although as a Catholic school we will teach the Catholic faith within the guidelines prescribed by our bishop.”
The Herald reported last week that Mr Emery had emailed staff advising that they should vote in the upcoming plebiscite according to their conscience, but shouldn’t “put yourself out there in a way that could be detrimental to your employment or promotional prospects in a Catholic school”.
“You are of course also OK to say that you agree with the church’s view on the issue, if that is what you believe,” he wrote.
“It is NOT OK [sic] to say or suggest or imply that you believe the other side of the debate is the correct one - even if you do!”
It is understood staff called an emergency meeting with students last week over the matter.
