In December 2017 Nyssa Burrells suffered a life threatening brain injury in a trackwork fall and after several weeks in a coma spent two months in hospital before undertaking a lengthy period of rehabilitation.
Since making a comeback to race riding last year, a trainer to give her opportunities has been Wayne Prisk including aboard the eight year old Jawsome at recent starts.
Contesting the 1100 metres Nicholson Petroleum Benchmark 50 Handicap at Forbes, Jawsome ($12) from midfield wore down Lookin' Alive ( Jake Pracey-Holmes,$21 ) to win by a neck with Billy Bent Ear (Andrew Banks, $6.50) half a length away third.
Another jockey back in action after being sidelined with serious injuries is the Bathurst based Chelsea Ings who was involved in a bad fall at Hawkesbury in May 2020.
Approaching the home turn in the 1200 metres Walkers AGnVET Maiden Handicap, Chelsea Ings had the Greg O'Neill, Narromine trained Hoffy's Dream ($16) ready to challenge and over the concluding stages overhauled Kallie (Liam Blanch, $8.50) to win by over a length with the Wayne Prisk, Cobar trained Cinders (Nyssa Burrells, $61) holding on for third.
Apart from being a more than capable jockey, Chelsea Ings is also well known as a horse breaker, working from the stables of her mother, the Bathurst trainer Wanda Ings.
Despite heavy rain several times during the meeting the Forbes track remained very safe for racing and before a good crowd Cowra jockey Mathew Cahill won the opening race, the Jesse and Catherine Newcombe 1800 metres Class 1 & Maiden Plate on the Doug Gorrel, Canberra trained Same Old Scene.
Working through the field from near last, Same Old Scene ($2.60 favourite) scored by a half head from Dizzy Dylan ( Tony Cavallo,$6 ) with four lengths to the third placed Down Stage (Julia Presits, $17).
Former successful jockey Catherine Newcombe from Forbes along with her husband Jesse Newcombe not only sponsored a race but also sponsored the $500 Jockeys Challenge won by apprentice Heni Ede.
In the saddle on the Rodger Waters, Wantabadgery trained pair Sizzleonthebridge and Zenyasa, Heni Ede produced outstanding winning rides.
Sizzleonthebridge ( $2.25 favourite ) enjoyed a cosy run behind the leader before beating Penny's Bonita's ( Elissa Meredith,$15 ) and Boult ( Tony Cavallo,$4.20 ) in the 1300 metres Peter Maher Shearing Services Benchmark 58 Handicap.
Escaping a pocket, Zenyasa ( $9.50 ) rushed home to win the 1400 metres Darling Irrigation Maiden Plate from Big Apple Burt ( Kath Bell-Pitomac,$3.70 fav.) and Fire Shadow ( Kayla Nisbet,$10 ).
Backing up after winning at Wellington on Boxing Day, the Rodney Robb, Nyngan trained Spinher ($6) under strong riding from Michael Heagney reeled in Careering Away (Ellen Hennessy, $6) to win by a neck with Opera Tickets (Nyssa Burrells, $5.50 favourite) finishing third in the 1000 metres RAF Heating & CoolingServices Benchmark 50 Handicap.
