Born in Footscray in 1916, Jessie is a lifelong Bulldogs fan who happened to celebrate her 100th birthday on the eve of the Western Bulldogs’ second grand final appearance in 55 years.
Jessie’s son Neville Howlett said it could be a good omen.
“When the Western Bulldogs won their first flag I was born so you just never know what tomorrow will bring,” Mr Howlett said.
Grand final nerves were put on hold as birthday celebrations went underway at Stawell Hospital.
Jessie’s grandson Dominique Howlett said everyone in the family was “over the moon” to see her reach the milestone.
“It’s amazing, we’ve never been to a 100th birthday and when it happens in your family it’s surreal,” Mr Howlett said.
Jessie had been living at home until six weeks ago when an inconspicuous scratch became infected and led to her hospitalisation.
Her son Neville said the last six weeks were a struggle and this milestone was something everyone was waiting and pushing for.
“Her body is letting her down sadly but her mind is still sharp, she can remember right back to her childhood.”
Jessie’s daughter Yvonne Harvey said it’s been a joy to have her mother around for so long and share her quirky sense of humour.
“I remember when she turned 90 and she told me, so I’ve had 30 years on my own, 30 years of married life and 30 years of not married life,” Ms Harvey said.
Birthday celebrations will continue at Stawell Hospital on Sunday, but if the Bulldogs win tomorrow an even bigger party can be expected.
