The Bus Safety Program includes classroom discussions, presentations and - best of all - a ride on the bus with driver Peter Muffet.
The Forbes NRMA Insurance representative Leah Smith said the program aims to increase children’s confidence and ensure their trip to and from school is always a safe one.
“Bus travel can be a daunting experience for school children, so it’s important to improve their understanding of the dangers that exist when travelling in a vehicle or crossing a road," NRMA said.
The NRMA explained in a media release that the bus safety program teaches children to:
Always stand two steps back from the kerb when waiting for the bus;
Never push or shove each other or muck around at the bus stop;
Wait for the bus to stop completely before getting on or off;
Tell the driver straight away if they miss their stop;
Wait for the bus to move away from the kerb before crossing the road;
Discuss with Mum or Dad who is a ‘safe adult’; and
Ask Mum or Dad to write their home phone number on the inside of their bag.
