Forbes Birth to Kinder’s Reading Down Town Day was a hit with everyone getting into the spirit of dressing up as their favourite book character.
A number of activities were planned for children throughout the morning including the Yala Gari performance by Darren and Sharon Sutherland at Town Hall, reading with Freeda the Reader at Forbes Town Library and activities at the Anglican Church Hall.
Families, local childcare centres and kindergarten classes joined in on the activities, with older kids also dressing up and reading down town. A special performance was also held at Forbes Public School, with a variety of acts performing to a large crowd.
A number of local businesses got involved in the day, opening up their doors to read to children.
Forbes Birth to Kinder made up hundreds of goodie bags full of books for kids to take home to enjoy.
“We had really good support for our bag of books from local businesses, and especially from Essential Energy, Northparkes Mine and St George bank,” Forbes Birth to Kinder president Natalie Walker said.
“It was really nice that Central West Libraries supported us this year bringing Freeda the Reader along and for Bronwyn Clark [Forbes librarian] to open up the library for the kids to grab a book, sit down and read it.
“Thanks also to all the shops for opening their doors and allowing schools and families to come in and read a book and to the schools for providing the activities in the Anglican Hall.”
The event is a part of National Book Week celebrations.
