Hosted by Warren Windsports, the event will launch tomorrow and - weather permitting - continue over four days until Monday, October 6.
Floater, or open cross-bar, gliders are typically flown by novice or less experienced pilots, but Big Spring spokesperson Vicki Cain said accomplished glider pilots have also registered for the event.
“This is a glider specific competition, so you are only allowed to enter a single surface glider,” Cain said.
“The idea is to introduce novice pilots to competition, but also it’s spring and it’s a good chance for everyone to get in the air for the first time this season,” she said.
Pilots from across NSW have registered but also some from the ACT and Victoria.
Vicki said Big Spring would offer something for a wide range of abilities. Daily tasks will focus on Forbes and its immediate surrounds rather than the long distance flights featured in the Flatlands competition held each January.
“For many it will be their first flight for a couple of months. Because it’s only spring the thermals aren’t going to be fantastic but it should still be good.”
Vicki said drivers were needed for the Big Spring competition.
