Agent Murray Reid from VC Reid and Sons said last Thursday’s stud sale saw excellent prices.
“You couldn’t get any better,” he said.
Bedgerabong yarded 79 pigs from breeders in South Australia, Victoria and northern NSW.
Top boar, a Large White, sold for $2700.
The top mated gilt sold for $3050 while the top gilt sold for $2050.
“The average price across the whole sale was $1573,” Mr Reid said. “That’s excellent.”
There were major buyers from Tullamore represented, but they also came from Sydney and southern NSW.
Mr Reid said the day’s trade show had also been very successful and stall holders had given positive feedback.
Forbes’ regular fortnightly pig sales are yarding 500-700 pigs and prices have remained quite firm in what is traditionally a quiet season.
Mr Reid said pig sales have a real peak from October as Christmas ham demand rises through to Chinese New Year.
“This isn’t the peak demand season but it’s holding up quite well,” he said.
Bedgerabong also hosted nearly 100 school students from a number of schools for an education day on the Wednesday before the sale.
Twenty four students from Forbes High School - across years seven to 11 - were part of the day.
Events complemented their term’s studies on pigs and also benefitted students who are on the show team.
Students washed and presented pigs for show, then learned to parade them.
They also had workshops covering artificial insemination, ultrasound demonstration as well discussions about feral pig control, marketing and consumption of pork in Australia and worldwide.
