Speaking up on prostate cancer

Guest speakers include Stephen Millard, who is conducting clinical trials into prostate cancer.

Mr Millard was last year appointed manager of the newly created Clinical Trials Unit at Orange Hospital. 

Dr John Troller, ambassador for the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and founding member of the Bathurst Prostate Cancer Support Group will also speak on the evening. 

Local councillor Dennis Booth, who has lived through prostate cancer, is also to speak. 

Prostate cancer sufferers, their families and anyone interested is urged to attend and learn more.

“There are a number of information and awareness sessions on breast cancer and ovarian cancer for women, but not many for men such as prostate cancer, that’s why we have worked with CanAssist to organise this event,” Mayor Phyllis Miller said.

“We also hope that at the forum, a Prostate Cancer Support Group will be formed.”

The event will be at the Forbes Services Memorial Club on Thursday, September 1 at 6.30pm, a light supper will be provided. For more information contact Blake at Council on 6850 2300.

It coincides with International Men’s Cancer Awareness Day and the start of Blue September.

Also raising awareness of prostate cancer are the Postie Bikes for Prostate riders who came through the area this week.

The riders are on an epic journey from Hobart to Cairns – all travelling on ex-postie bikes donated by Australia Post which do a top speed of 80km per hour.

Claremont Rotarian, Eric Myers said they had three aims.

“Firstly getting the word of men’s health awareness out there, including the importance of getting check ups,” he said. “Secondly, the importance of supporting your mates.”

Third of course is raising funds for prostate cancer research.
