Sophie Welsh was named the school’s dux. She received Band 6 – or top 90th percentile band – results in three of her subjects, PDHPE, Food Technology and Studies of Religion.
Delighted with her ATAR in the 90s, she’s now deciding whether to study physiotherapy or occupational therapy at the University of Newcastle.
Her success in her school subjects reflects her passion for “all things health”.
“I think the reason I did well was because I was so interested in it,” Sophie said.
“I was talking about (the course work) even outside of school.”
Sophie was a boarder at the College and also credits the mandatory study schedule for her success.
A few of the students who were gathered at the school to share their success with their teachers last Thursday had a chat to the Advocate and shared their plans.
Hayden Page is heading for Wollongong where he will study a Bachelor of Science; Simon Bayley is also heading for the southern coast to study a Bachelor of Commerce.
Samantha Girot has been accepted to university in Wagga Wagga to study oral health.
Katie Haynes has taken a year between her studies: she’s currently working with the Catholic Education Office and plans to head to Wollongong in 2019 to study Communications Law.
Chloe Morrison – who also achieved Band 6 results in three of her subjects - is also heading to Wollongong, she’s been accepted to study psychology.
Georgia Allegri is heading for Newcastle with plans to study architecture.
The school was celebrating many students’ excellent results, with 20 Band 6s (90 and above) and 117 Band 5s (80 and above).
Sophie said from all reports her classmates had been pleased and relieved when the university entrance rankings were released on Friday, with results generally as good as and better than expected.
About 90 students from the College sat down to 31 different subject exams across the HSC.
“We are very pleased with the results, very proud of their achievements whilst at school and their HSC results,” the school’s director of curriculum Trish Martin said.
She added a reminder to students that the HSC was a stepping stone – not the end of the journey.
Principal Brother Michael congratulated the students on their achievements.
“The school is very pleased with the results,” he said.
“Every group of students is unique, this result is unique to this group of students, they have done so well.”
Brother Michael also congratulated the College’s Year 12 teachers on another wonderful year.
