The NSW Government is planning to replace the current bridge which is narrow, and nearing the end of its life, to improve safety for road users and reduce future maintenance costs.
“The REF was displayed between 27 June and 27 July,” Mr Colless said.
“During the display period two drop-in information sessions were held in Forbes with more than 160 people attending to speak with the project team.
“The majority of the community was supportive of the new bridge design.
“Two submissions were received during the REF display period, a submissions report has been prepared which summarises the issues raised in each submission and provides a response to each issue.
“The issues raised by the submissions included the removal of the bridge and pedestrian footbridge and the re-use of the light fittings.
“As the submissions did not alter the proposal or the bridge design, the next steps in the project are to determine the REF and to carry out maintenance and install traffic lights on Iron Bridge, which will form part of the heavy vehicle detour route during the construction of the new bridge.”
The heavy vehicle detour will be implemented prior to the demolition of the existing bridge.
To allow heavy vehicles to cross Iron Bridge, maintenance work will be completed and traffic lights will be installed.
Maintenance work on Iron Bridge will start next week with traffic lights installed on the bridge from March next year.
“Once traffic lights are installed they will be left there permanently to ensure continued safety on the bridge,” Mr Colless said.
Motorists have been advised to allow additional time when traveling via the Iron Bridge for delays associated with the improvements.
Mr Colless thanked the Forbes community for their feedback for the new bridge during the concept design display late last year and during the recent display of the REF and encouraged residents to sign up to the e-newsletter to receive up to date information on the project going forward.
