Men's Golf
One the weekend the sun shone, the wind was ever present but pleasant on Sunday, and the golfers enjoyed a full and tiring weekend of golf. This was the Annual Forbes Nissan Classic Weekend, supported by primary sponsor Frank Spice Nissan and a host of other local business.
The weekend comprises a 4BBB event for Men and Ladies on Saturday, with an Individual Stroke competition, again Men and Ladies, on Sunday. Players came from afar to contest the event, with 28 Clubs represented covering Queensland, West Australia, Victoria and NSW/ACT.
The big event was the Forbes Nissan Classic Cup on Sunday. In all, 161 players took to the course, including 18 Ladies of which three were visitors and two of whom took home prizes. The Mens prizes were shared around the country, although naturally the locals with their deep knowledge of the nuances of the course managed to win the bulk of the prizes.
Once again the course was in superb order, thanks to Course Superintendent Jack Clarke and his band, with the drying winds making the greens slick but holding true. This was also an opportunity for mini celebrations. Golf Pro Peter Tilden was photographed with his group of 'Juniors' which included - Brian Doyle, Lloyd Cotterill, Dany Acret, Daryl McAulliffe and Greg Webb.
There was also the 'Bown Brothers' group on the course. Ian Bown enjoyed the company of oldest brother Reg and younger brother Mark. It was a case of brotherly competitive spirit and too much talk which ruined their games on Sunday.
And of course the many re-uniting of friends from Nelson Bays and Cabramatta golf clubs. Either of those Clubs usually pick up the 'Most Visitors' award, but this year it went to Parkes GC. Regardless, many a good story was re-told.
A full list of results is provided below, but here is a quick note about the main prizes. Local player Steve Betland took out the coveted Classic Trophy for the Best Scratch score with 71. He indicated that among his group there was some good golf played, but also some poor putting. A common theme across the weekend was the wind, and how it seemed to steer a player's ball to the trees. This caused some real wayward shots by some players. Peter Sinclair from Nelson Bays hit his tee shot on the 13th with a slice/shank. The wind took his ball which bounced through the trees on the hard ground and finished near the lake beside the 14th hole.
Playing in the other direction, Anthony Alley teed off from the 5th and finished on the far side of the 13th fairway. His attempted 'controlled slice' to the fifth green, and he is a leftie, finished on the 15th fairway. And Kim Herbert blames the wind for he losing his balance during a swing, resulting in him having an air-swing whilst in the ninth bunker.
Touring Pro Tommy was helping at the refreshment tent on the tenth tee. He was generally impressed with the standard of play, pleased to see that there were no startling mishaps, and felt for those few who managed to put a shot into the creek. Undoubtedly he had a good view of everything.
Saturday's competition was a 4BBB format for Men and Ladies, sponsored by the Forbes Advocate. A good crown of 148 players enjoyed the company, if not the blustery winds which affected the scores.
In the Mens 4BBB section, the results were-
Forbes 'Services Memorial Club' Trophy:

Scratch Stableford Runner-up: D Bayley/ P Dawson 36 points.

The Saturday play also had a mix of good and bad events. Danny Acret re-acquainted himself with the Forbes course with an ordinary front-nine but very good back-nine. Of his pairing he recorded eight of the nine holes, for a two-over 38 score. But he and partner Geoff Drane only finished 'all square' against John Fitzgerald and Graham Newport.
Max Haley scored a great birdie on the tenth. His tee shot went into the trees on the right, from where his second shot finished on the grass hump left of the green. He then chipped in for his birdie.
Across the weekend there were a number of raffles drawn and the Calcutta played.
The Calcutta comprised 12 teams, which were raffled and sold on Saturday night for Sunday's play. It finished in a tie between Mitch McGlashan/Rod Besgrove and Shane Sallaway/M Spice.
The Classic Raffle was won also well supported by both sponsors and players. The prize winners were: first - Kane Wyoum (Bernardi's voucher), second Jill Cripps (Cahill's voucher) and 3rd Jo Aerts (Loomzy's Fishing gear package). Thank you to all for your support.
Through the year the Events Committee has been raffling a Golf Cart, supplied by Pete Tilden of E-Z-GO Golf Carts. There has been much generous support for this, especially with the promise of 'Australia Wide Delivery'. But the deliverers are disappointed as the cart was won by Forbes player Jean Judge. Now she has to organise a garage for it.
