The Club Pairs competition kicked off last weekend with four matches contested.
Ray Dunstan and Sid Morris drew reigning titleholders, Brian Asimus and Scott Andrews, in their first game and were unable to match it with the accomplished pairing.
Spro and Scooter are hot favourites to add the 2020 pairs title to their list of achievements and they started their campaign with a comfortable 35 to 6 win.
Paul Baker and John Kennedy are a new combination this year and they played a couple of seasoned campaigners in the form of Scott McKellar and Tony Bratton.
Paul and John played consistent bowls to dominate most of the ends and won 22 to 12. Lyall Strudwick and Geoff Williams played Al Phillips and John Stringer in a close run affair.
The game was evenly matched at 8 to 12 after 11 ends but Lyall and Geoff looked to have the upper hand when they won five consecutive ends to reach 18 while their opposition was stranded on 12.
However, Al and Pom pulled out the big bowls to win the final five ends and round their opponents up with a 22 to 18 victory.
Christian West and Lindsay Willding had a win over Alf Davies and Greg Gunn but no details are available as the scorecard for the match was not provided.
Saturday morning: The commencement of the Club pairs competition depleted bowling numbers last Saturday morning.
Ivan Hodges and Peter Hocking teamed up in a game against Cliff Nelson and Glen Kearney. The result was 30 to 18 win for Cliff and Glen.
Trevor Currey and Bert Bailey played Peter Mackay and Grant Lambert. The number of ends won by each team was fairly even but Trevor and Bert managed to pick up multiple shots on many of their winning ends whereas Peter and Grant could only manage single shots on most of theirs. At the conclusion of the game it was a 23 to 14 win for Trevor and Bert.
Wednesday morning: Bowls can be a funny game as Stewart Hayes, Peter Greenhalgh and Barry Shine found out last Wednesday leading 11-8 after nine ends against Geoff Coles, Wayne Burton and Peter White only to lose 15 on the remaining five ends for a 23-11 result in a game lasting 14 ends.
To top it off the White combo won the card draw as the day winners.
Thirty players took to the greens with another two games of triples while three games of pairs were also played out.
The wily old combination of Fred Vogelsang, Peter Mackay and Ray Dunstan were another combination to finish strong winning 15-10 over Bill O'Connell, Michael Valentue and Rob Priest over 16 ends after scores went against the winners 6-8 after nine ends.
Copping a 'touch-up' were Barry White, Sid Morris and Tony Bratton going down 14-5 to 'King Lead' John Baass, Jim Moloy and 'Gunna' Williams over 14 ends.
The three pairs were slightly one-sided with Noel Jolliffe and Laurie Crouch in form to win 20-12 over Paul Doust and Lyell Strudwick in a 20 ends game leading 10-5 at 'oranges'.
Trevor Currey and John Gorton displayed their experience late to hold their nerve winning 19-12 over Kerry Dunstan and Don Craft over 18 ends. The winners led 8-5 at half time.
In the final game Cliff Nelson was the perfect lead for the inform Scott McKellar winning 23-10 against Bill Looney and Bob Grant over another 18 end fixture. The score after nine was 12-5.
Wednesday social bowls is now back in full swing, nominations from 9.30am for a 10am card call. All are welcome, bowls supplied if needed. For more on all bowls competitions phone the club on 68521499.
