Hundreds plot best course at orienteering event in Eugowra

This event, which was originally scheduled to take place last year saw participants navigating their own way around courses at the Quarry, 5km west of Eugowra on the Escort Way.

Orienteering is a sport in which you navigate your own way around a course using a special orienteering map and compass, visiting marked check points along the way.

Rod Eckels from Garingal Orienteers said they saw around 370 entrants sign up for the two day event from all around the country including NSW, Tasmania, Western Australia, Victoria, South Australia and Queensland.

Mr Eckels said they were happy with the number of entrants which was helped by Orienteering events around the region in the week before.

Locals were invited to take part and try out some of the shorter courses on Sunday, with an estimated 14 people coming from Forbes and Eugowra taking part.

Mr Eckels said the local participation was good though early morning rain on Sunday may have discouraged some people from taking part.

Orienteering is open for all ages to take part in with entrants as old as 85 taking part in the weekend's event.

There are regular orienteering events hosted by Orienteering Clubs across the state over the course of the year.
