Time to celebrate at Shed

Members of the community and from Men's Sheds around the region travelled down to Union Street on Thursday for the official opening of the Forbes Men's Shed.

Forbes Men's Shed President Norm Haley said the official opening of the Forbes Men's Shed was well attended with guests from the local community as well as from Men's Sheds including Parkes, Canowindra, Trundle, Narromine, Young and Lake Cargelligo.

The guests at the official opening of the shed were also joined by Member for Orange Phil Donato, Nationals Upper House MP, Sam Farraway and Shooters, Fishers and Farmers Upper House MP Mark Banasiak.

Members of the Forbes Men's Shed settled into their purpose-built shed last September but they held off on hosting the official opening at the time due to COVID-related concerns.

The Men's shed features space for woodworking and restoration projects along with an office space, store rooms, dining room and kitchen as well as disabled access toilet.

At the official opening, Mr Haley spoke about the history of the Men's Shed in Forbes and the process of moving into their Union Street premises.

The Men's Shed was formed in Forbes in 2007 at the Lodge before moving to the Showground in 2008.

Mr Haley said that by 2011 they had began working towards finding a purpose-built facility for the Men's Shed.

The progress was helped along with a donation of $120,000 by community members to purchase a block of land.

Mr Haley said he along with Peter Norris and Ray New helped to get the building to where it is today with the support of the Men's Shed members.

Mr Haley said he would like to thank the members of the Forbes Men's Shed for all of their hard work in getting the shed up and running.

Mr Haley said he would also like to thank the Forbes community for their support over the years.

The Forbes Men's Shed works on a variety of woodwork and restoration projects and has begun putting together bags of kindling and firewood for sale.

The members meet from 9am to 12pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

If anyone is interested in joining the Men's Shed, contact a member of the Men's Shed. Joining the shed costs $30 a year.
