The photograph is the Forbes Union Band of 1898 and the caption says the ribbon is a memento of the Grenfell Band Contest.
The image recently caught the eye of museum volunteer Rex Barton, who recognised his grandfather's name amongst the band members (they are listed in full above).
The only other historical documentation Rex and wife Cheryl have been able to find so far of the band comes from the Grenfell Record and Lachlan District Advertiser of that September.
A band contest was part of the Grenfell Show, and results published in the paper reveal first place honours were shared between the Union Band as pictured and the Forbes Brass Band (Acret's).
Rex would be interested to hear from anyone with more history of the band, you can contact him on 6852 3029 or email the Forbes Family History Gruop on ffhg@westserv.net.au
The Forbes Family History Group has many more fascinating local research projects, but they are seeking volunteers with the time and capacity to help them pursue them.
The group opens Wednesday and Saturday mornings in the room behind Forbes Library (entry from Harold Street).
Forbes Museum is open 2pm to 4pm daily in Cross Street.
