It might not rival the Easter bowls carnival just yet, but Forbes Sports and Recreation Club’s mixed pairs event this weekend is shaping up as one of the most popular on the local lawn bowls calendar.

The July 19 and 20 carnival has drawn 32 mixed pairs from clubs including Blayney, Grenfell, Temora, Barmedman, Parkes Town, Harden, Molong, Quandialla, Cowra and Condobolin, as well as a strong contingent of local bowlers.
The event is again sponsored by Forbes Shire Council and will offer $2000 in prizemoney, shared among the top four combinations.
Forbes men’s bowls president Graham Rutherford and his sister Denise are defending champions and will again team up this weekend.
He said the response to the carnival was a pleasant surprise.
“It’s really good,” he said of the final field of 64 bowlers.
“We’ve only got nine pairs so far for the Ben Hall Pairs and the women haven’t had many yet for their president’s day, which is generally supported by all the surrounding clubs,” Graham said.
The forecast is for fine weekend weather, and if correct, each pair should play five matches over two days, starting at 9am Saturday and Sunday.
The winners will be determined by games won and points accrued, so Graham tipped that teams would need to remain undefeated.
