The original proposal for the renaming of the road to The Bogan Way was to provide a common road name for the route between Forbes and Nyngan, as it is already the name used by both Parkes and Lachlan Shires.
Director of tourism, community and cultural development Richard Morgan said the name is a great tourist drawcard which would benefit Forbes.
“The Bogan Way sign in Parkes is a tourist attraction – people often get out of the car to take photos in front of it,” he said.
“The name is also already locked in for the other councils.”
However Forbes Shire councillors objected to the name The Bogan Way, instead preferring The Bogan Gate Way, as it is less derogatory.
A few months ago Forbes Shire Council advertised for objections to the name change, as well as sending notifications to property owners who would be directly affected.
Two objections were received; one for the negative connotations of the name as well as the inconvenience of residents having to change their address with authorities and organisations.
The second objector raised similar concerns, regarding the inconvenience and cost to residents and council.
They were also concerned about the confusion that the name change would create for emergency services trying to find a particular address.
These objections were taken into consideration, however council have decided to go ahead with the renaming.
Changing the name to the Bogan Gate Way does not meet the objective of the original proposal to bring the road into line with Parkes and Lachlan shire councils however council will now be advising the affected residents of the change.
