Bushrangers went in to the match on Sunday afternoon in Wyalong knowing that they needed a win or a draw to progress, while West Wyalong had to win or be knocked out of the comp until next season.
This is West Wyalong’s first season fielding a senior men’s team for many years and all credit to them as they have done their town proud.
They started the match displaying this same passion, but were keenly matched by the Forbes boys who knew their season was also on the line.
Forbes were playing attractive football with Brendon King working well in the midfield as a substitute for suspended player / coach David Hayward.
He and midfield partner Damien Apps created plenty of chances all day.
Defence was also key and Nathan Molloy and David Hodges were at the heart of a stellar Forbes performance, repelling the speedy Wyalong attacks.
Up front Benz Acido had his best game for a while scoring a goal and holding up play on many crucial occasions.
It was Roger Bennie who took players’ player accolades however, scoring two goals including the crucial third.
This left the scores level at 3-all, enough to see Forbes safely through to the semi-finals.
There was a moment of controversy near the end when West Wyalong scored a goal only to have it ruled out by the linesman who had spotted an off-side, much to the Wyalong players’ frustration.
A draw was a fair reflection on an even game and just rewards for Bushrangers who have battled all season through injury and player shortages and thoroughly deserve their place in the finals.
They go into the elimination semi-final against Parkes Chooks at noon at Harrison Park, Parkes, this Sunday and will need another season best performance to win.
It will be particularly hard as David Hayward is still suspended and Luke Davis, showing no loyalty to his soccer, is getting married instead of playing for Bushrangers. Good luck Luke, and congratulations mate.
