Based on the original motion picture produced in 1988 by John Waters, and more famously re-made in 2007 with John Travolta starring as Edna Turnblad and Zac Efron as Link, Hairspray is a light-hearted musical that carries a deeper message.
With music by Marc Shaiman, lyrics by Scott Wittman and Shaiman and a book by Mark O’-Donnell and Thomas Meehan, Hairspray is based on the 1988 John Waters film of the same name.
It’s 1962 and change is in the air.
Tracy Turnblad (Brittni Carroll), a plus-size girl with big hair and big dreams, has only one passion in life – to dance on the ‘Corny Collins Show’ on TV.
When her chance arrives, she grooves her way to instant stardom and the eyes of teen dream Link Larkin (Hank Paul).
But with the show’s scheming stage manager (Shev Brown) and daughter Amber (Alyssa Miller) against her, trend-setting Tracy will need the help of her best friend Penny (Chloe MacRae), new found ally, Seaweed (Damien Sammut), her big-hearted mother Edna (Dooley Thomson) and sassy co-host Motormouth Maybelle (Christie Green) to show the world that all it takes to make a dream come true is a toe-tappin’ beat and a little hairspray.
Featuring songs in true 1960’s style such as “You Can’t Stop the Beat”, “Welcome to the Sixties”, “The Nicest Kids in Town” and “Good Morning Baltimore”, Hairspray, winner of the Best Musical Tony Award in 2003, will have you dancing in your seats and laughing til you cry.
This promises to be a show that must not be missed.
