Vandenberg and News on Rankin were expecting a close meeting after a nil-all result from their last encounter, but neither could have guessed just how evenly matched the game would be.
The game started in News on Rankin’s favour, with mid-fielder Kaitlyn Andrews netting the first ball within 10 minutes.
While News on Rankin held the 1-nil lead until halftime, the Vandenberg’s Sam Jones equalised the score in the first five minutes of the second half.
Not long afterwards, the Vandenberg’s Annie Hodge scored, bringing the points to 2-1 and putting more pressure on the opposition to step up their game.
With five minutes left, spectators would have been forgiven for thinking the Vandenberg had it in the bag - but News On Rankin surprised everyone with a goal kicked by Grace Gorton.
As the whistle blew, the final score was 2-2.
Player of the match for the Vandenberg was Lena Hapgood who helped bolster the backline.
Forward Grace Gorton and back Ange Markwort shared the title for News on Rankin’s player of the match.
