After last week’s shock loss to rivals Western Sydney Wanderers, the Hyundai A-League ladder leaders returned to the winners’ circle with a 3-1 win over Melbourne City.
Sydney FC was kept scoreless last week against the Wanderers, but the team’s attack fired up against City at AAMI Park
Striker Bobo led the charge with a double and Brandon O’Neill also found the back of the net in the round 21 match.
Melbourne’s sole goal was scored by Nick Fitzgerald.
It was a stalemate in the first 20 minutes.
In the 24th minute, Sydney FC received a penalty after City defender Manny Muscat dragged down his opponent Filip Holosko.
Muscat received a yellow card for the incident.
Bobo capitalised on the opportunity to help his side to a 1-0 lead.
However, City struck back almost immediately through Fitzgerald to draw level at 1-all after 25 minutes.
The score remained that way for the remainder of the half.
A costly moment occurred late in the first half when Muscat received a second yellow card.
As a result, Muscat was handed a red card and City was reduced to 10 players for the remainder of the match.
Sydney FC capitalised on the numbers advantage, scoring two goals after half time.
In the 55th minute, City’s Ruon Tongyik was penalised for a handball on the edge of the penalty box.
From the free kick, O’Neill nailed a curling strike into the top left corner to help his side to a 2-1 lead.
Victory was then sealed in the 67th minute when Bobo found the back of the net, following a beautiful pass from Milos Ninkovic.
The result strengthens Sydney FC’s hold of first place of the ladder after 21 rounds of the Hyundai A-League season.
Sydney FC created history on Friday night by becoming the quickest team to reach 50 competition points during an A-League season.
