Horses, sports, friends, campfires by night and sunshine by day … the week could not have got much better for this group of kids who spent the week at Jemalong Polo Club.

Twenty-three horse lovers aged six to 16 spent three days at the rural clubhouse, learning all about the sport and their horses.
They had coaching with NSW State Polo Coach Andrew Williams, starting with lessons in horse care and preparation for the sport, then progressing to sitting on a wooden horse to learn how to hold the mallet and hit the ball properly.
They took to the field for coaching chukkas (a period of time in a polo game) playing side by side with an experienced player.
The club’s Michael Williams said it had been a terrific week and he was pleased to have a strong showing of local kids.
“The development of the kids over the three days has been phenomenal,” he said. “Some the families have camped on site, we had a bonfire and pizza night, they loved it.”
Locals Holly and Lottie Jacobson were certainly enjoying their time when the Advocate visited on Thursday.
The girls said it was the chance to combine horses, sport and competing as a team that had drawn them to the holiday camp.
Siblings Lachie and Harriet Peters were also enjoying the camp. It was Harriet’s introduction to polo, she and her horse Sergeant Pepper were settling in well.
Jemalong Polo Club’s big annual tournament is coming up fast. It’s on May 6 and 7 out at the club (on South Condobolin Road or Henry Lawson Way).
