A local cooking class for people living with disability has been commended as a finalist at the NSW Business Chamber Regional Business Awards.

House with No Steps Individual Support Manager in Forbes, Kim Wright said they were delighted their “Smokin’ Cooking Class” has been recognised.
“At the heart of the program it is our drive to find and fill the gaps in local services and supports, to help people with a disability live their best life,” she said.
The popular class was started by House With No Steps in conjunction with Meals on Wheels in 2016.
“There was a gap in supports for people with a disability to learn this skill of cooking a meal in the local community,” Ms Wright said.
“We partnered with Meals on Wheels, as they too noticed the need – and they have the experience to ensure healthy, yummy food is on the menu each week.”
Meals on Wheels Coordinator Sheryl Garner said the participants come to the cooking class because they have a goal, either to live more independently, or to pick up a new skill.
Each week the class cooks something different with a focus on making healthier eating choices.
When the program first started, 10 people signed up. Now 17 people attend regularly.
“It’s more than just cooking; the class is a great social outing for participants,” Ms Wright said.
The Smok’n Cooking Class runs every Monday night from 5pm to 7pm and is open to people between 18 and 64.
