This year has again shown the strength and resilience of the people of the Riverina and Central West in the face of one of the worst droughts parts of our region and, indeed, much of eastern Australia has suffered in living memory.
My thoughts and prayers go out to all those for whom the drought has taken its toll as well as those who have devoted their energies to helping drought-affected communities and families.
When nature throws its worst at us we Australians are at our best and I have been touched and inspired time and time again this year by the generosity, compassion and genuine love shown for families who are suffering from difficulties not of their own making.
As the New Year approaches comes new hope consistent rains will return in 2019, but even if good rain does fall we must be resolute in our support of all who will continue to need help after the drought eventually breaks.
While 2018 has been a year of challenge it has also been a year of many successes in the Riverina and Central West.
I have had the joy of visiting many schools this year to present ANZAC writing and Christmas colouring-in competition awards and certificates and came away convinced the future of our great country is in good hands when our younger generations take leadership roles.
This year was also the centenary of the World War I Armistice.
The commemorations I attended gave me pause to reflect on the protective work our Australian Defence Force personnel are doing for us every day here in Australia and overseas and I thank them for that service.
We must also remember and thank the various charity, volunteer service club and emergency service workers from many organisations throughout the Riverina and Central West who bring some joy, hope and help to the people who need it most at Christmas.
Please also remember the reason for the season – the birth of Jesus Christ, an event which brought hope and renewal to the world, the message of which still resonates strongly today.
Christmas is a season of peace and joy.
It is a great time to catch up with family and friends and reflect on the year that has passed.
Sadly, though, there are many for whom Christmas is a time of great loneliness and loss. And we must remember those people at this time of year.
Keep safe this Christmas on the roads and in the water.
Enjoy a barbecue or take a dip in one of our many great waterways, but always be on the lookout for each other, especially young children and those not confident in the water.
Many of us will be on the roads this Christmas.
Please be cautious and patient and do not speed or drink and drive.
Have a memorable, safe and happy Christmas and New Year and I look forward to representing you in 2019.
