The plan is to add 64 new multi-purpose yards to the east of the existing cattleyards, with linkages to the existing sheepyards.
The yards were designed to handle 80,000 cattle a year, documents to council’s July meeting said, but 196,333 cattle had gone through in the past two years.
Council intends to expand the cattle selling facilities to handle throughput of 105,000 cattle a year.
Work on the Central West Livestock Exchange began in 2006, to replace the outdated Midstate Saleyards.
The brief has been prepared to engage a consultant to undertake the design of the upgrade and provide drawings and specifications to allow the works to go ahead.
Council has asked for the designs to be completed by October 27 to enable tenders and construction to be called and assessed.
The brief was part of the Saleyards Advisory Committee’s report to the July council meeting.
The committee had also resolved to develop a 12-month marketing and promotional plan for the livestock exchange, and write to the Forbes Associated Agents for a 50 per cent contribution towards it.
They voted to investigate restructuring saleyards management to increase efficiency and profitability.
