Forbes two-day showjump contest success in "arctic" conditions

Organiser Jennifer Wood said it was the fifth of the shows they have held since COVID-19 cancelled 2020 agricultural shows - and the biggest so far.

That's despite the entries being restricted to areas outside Greater Sydney under current health orders, entrants came from Forbes and surrounds as well as Canberra, Bourke, Dubbo and the Southern Highlands.

The highest class of showjumping, Sunday's grand prix, was won by Canberra's Lane Clarke riding Valentine Lodge Vanna. He's a returning champion at the Forbes show, having taken out the title at the March event.

Congratulations also go to a number of locals who featured amongst the achievers on Saturday and Sunday:

Ms Wood said the weekend was hugely successful, with volunteers and riders committed despite the challenging weather conditions.

"The equestrian community is absolutely amazing," she said.

These events were initiated by Ms Wood along with locals Laurie Norris and Rachael Morgan last year to give showjumpers the opportunity to compete after the events they would traditionally compete at, agricultural shows, were cancelled to COVID-19.

For the first time, this time, the schedule included thoroughbred classes supported by the Thoroughbred Sport Horse Association which aims to create a second career and an increased demand for retired racehorses.

"It was really great, we had lots of entries into those classes," Ms Wood said.

Ms Wood added the organisers express their thanks to Forbes PA and H for allowing them to host the events at the Showground.

"Thank you too to Laurie Norris and Rachael Morgan who work tirelessly," she said.

"Everyone was so happy to be there."

Showjumping will be back in the arena at the Forbes Show this September 10 and 11.
